Privatization

The major economic and social objective of the Benue State Government’s privatisation and commercialisation program is to catalyse broad-based development and the re-industrialization of Benue State. Specifically, this is by privatizing the state-owned enterprises to credible investors to induce competition. It will catalyse other private investors to establish similar industries and invest in the value chains of the agricultural and mineral commodities that provide the raw materials for these industries.

The legal basis for privatization and commercialization in Benue State is the Privatisation and Commercialisation Law, 2010. The law establishes the State Council on Privatisation and Commercialisation (SCPC) to articulate the economic and social objectives of privatisation and commercialisation of state enterprises (SEs). SCPC recommends the policies, guidelines, and criteria on privatisation, among others. The law establishes a Bureau of State Enterprises (BSE) as a secretariat of the Council that carries out duties and responsibilities assigned to it by the Council.
